Steinberger M Series TransTrem
I bought this guitar directly from Ned Steinberger after meeting him at the NAMM show in 1987. It was a second (with a minor cosmetic flaw) and it has a number 2 stamped on the side. Although this guitar is a second, it sounds and plays amazing! I used it a lot towards the end of my Rough Cutt era when Perry McCarty was singing instead of Paul Shortino. There were many unique features on this guitar but two of them stood out to me the most. One was the TransTrem which allowed you to bend chords (all the strings) up or down in tune, lock the overall tuning of the guitar up 2 whole steps or down 3 whole steps instantly! Really Fun… Eddie Van Halen used it on a few songs in the Sammy Hager era Van Halen.
The other cool feature was that it required special strings with balls on both ends. So you didn't have to cut the strings or wind them when you put them on. They just snapped in! Of course the down side to this is you had to find these special strings ha-ha.
Mike Rutherford actually designed this body shape along with world renowned luthier Roger Giffin. That's the reason this is called the "M" series.
